CvSU students join Int’l Speech Competition and Global Leadership Camp, Virata wins top 8

Cavite State University proved to be globally competitive as two students joined the Second Association of the Universities in Asia and the Pacific (AUAP) Students English Speech Competition and Global Leadership Camp in Daegu Health College, Daegu, South Korea, August 11 to 19, 2016.


                Yyna Dañiela Virata, fourth year AB Journalism student from the College of Arts and Sciences and Jaylanie Rellama, fourth year BS Education student from the College of Education were chosen to represent the University and the country in the said speech competition. Thirty-nine participants from twelve different countries such as Australia, Bangladesh, Canada, China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand competed.

The Speech Competition

                The contest was divided into two parts. On August 12, the participants presented their five-minute prepared speech then the top twenty performers were identified afterwards. Virata and Rellama both made it to the top twenty which made them qualify in the next round.

                On the second day, August 13, the twenty qualifiers presented their prepared speech followed by the impromptu speech competition. They were asked by the judges different questions which they should answer immediately for five minutes.

                In the end, Virata made it to the top eight. The contestant from Centro Escolar University (Philippines) won third place, Lyceum of the Philippines – Batangas (Philippines) second place, and the contestant from the University of Newcastle (Australia) won first place.

Global Leadership Camp

                Dr. Kim of DHC opened the Global Leadership Camp through an orientation on August 15. A recreational activity, facilitated by Ms. Eunha Lee followed. The participants were accompanied by the organizers in Unmunsa Buddhist Temple. They stayed overnight in Bohyun Training Institute in Miryang which is like a satellite campus of DHC.

                The camp was filled with different fun activities such as field trip in Haeundae, Busan, volunteering in a rehabilitation center for the disabled, lecture on global leadership, special lecture on Korean culture, traditional Korean cooking contest, K-pop dance tutorial, and evaluation and closing program.

                The two students were trained and accompanied by Bernard S. Feranil and Racquel G. Agustin, both faculty members from the Department of Languages and Mass Communication - College of Arts and Sciences.
